Does facebook determine your relationship status?

Yesterday, out of the blue, my crush went from being single, to in a relationship on facebook. He didn’t confirm his relationship with a specific girl though. His one guy friend ‘liked’ the activity, but three other friends commented the activity:
Good friend one: ‘get real’
Friend two: ‘really who would like your ugly mug lol’
Girl(that I suspected he was in the relationship with): ‘liarrr’
Also, when he was single, he had friendship, dating, a relationship, and networking as his ‘looking for’ section. After he put up that he was in a relationship, he took off everything he was ‘looking for’ except dating.
I mean from what his friends wrote and because he didn’t take off dating, I’m not sure if he truly does or not. But at the same time, I don’t know why he would put up that he was in a relationship if he’s not. Unfortunately were not friends so I can’t ask him right away, and he’s 20.
So what do you think?

If he changed his relationship status, then the chances are he is in a relationship.
